I'm trying to create a FAQ page so I have a "faq" CPT just with title and editor (question and answer) and I need to group the questions/posts into categories. This CPT does have publicly_queryable set to false so each post does not have a specific page on the public website, as I'm going to list all the questions on the same page.

I created a custom taxonomy (FAQ Category) to do this but realize that this taxonomy has a public page. is there anyway to NOT have a public page for this tax? Or should I just use a custom SELECT field on the faq CPT for the category?

Have you tried disabling the "query_var" feature in the custom taxonomy?

Yes, I did.

But clicking on "view" on each term on this taxonomy still opens up a page for this term and not a 404 page.

As a workaround I've set this taxonomy archives as noindex on WPSEO, but this is not a optimal solution.

This seem to be a feature that WordPress doesn't have and a general problem among users.

I did a quick search in Google and many workarounds came up. This one looks pretty good:
