The first-ever Toolset competition promises fun, new ideas and prizes!

The competition is closed. See who won in the winners announcement blog post.

Everyone is invited to the first Toolset competition and it’s all about custom searches.

The Best Custom Search

Why are custom searches so important?

E-commerce sites and directories typically have a lot of content. Instead of drilling down into categories, visitors want to run a quick search.

The Views plugin lets you build custom searches for anything. You can create searches by custom fields, taxonomy and even post parents.

The best thing about Toolset is that every site you build with it looks and works differently. So, if every site looks and works differently, which one is the best? That’s exactly what we’re going to find out!

Prizes

We hope that the fun in participation and the ideas that we’ll all share will be a prize by itself. Besides this, winners will receive free upgrades from your current account.

  • Views » Toolset (worth $70)
  • Toolset » Toolset for Life (worth $150)
  • Toolset for Life » Free WPML account (worth $79)

The competition will have three winners, one in each category:

  • Loveliest design
  • Best use of Toolset features
  • Most surprising concept

Who can participate?

Anyone with a valid account in wp-types.com for ‘Views’, ‘Toolset’ or ‘Toolset for Life’.

How to join?

To join the competition, show us your Toolset-based website, which includes a custom search. Explain how you’ve built it and how it’s working.

Submit your production sites (not under development) by:

  1. filling in the competition form
  2. leaving a comment here or (much better) on Toolset Facebook page. The comment should include the website URL (so we can match with the form submissions) and a brief description of your site. We need the comment here or on Facebook, so we can give you quick feedback about your submission.

Competition dates

The competition will be open from today and until Monday, Dec 21 (Christmas week). We will review all entries, announce winners and award prizes on Dec 23rd.

We hope to see a lot of sites. It’s going to be fun seeing what you build with Toolset and I’m sure that you’ll get some fresh ideas from others.

The website is developed to allow farmers to submit their wheat to be indexed and classed by growing zones and classifications. Prior to developing the website the farmers would have to try find the classifications on a very large PDF document with rows and rows of wheat varieties.

At the strategy meeting I came up with the idea that we could build a custom post type and have it display on the front end which will make it very easy for the list to be filtered and searchable. Something that was never possible through a PDF.

Smarter Dancer is a project by a father with two teenage daughters involved in ballet. The founder’s goal is to make smarter dancers by sharing information and thoughts about dance.

As a dance parent, he found himself searching the web for information about dance college programs, dance equipment, and audition schedules. As he collected more data, he realized he had a resource that he could share with other dancers and their parents.

The Smarter Dancer website heavily relies on the Types, Views, and Module Manager components of Toolset. The three pages powered by Toolset are:
* A curated collection of online dance articles, searchable by taxonomy.
* A listing of dancer retailers and their current specials and special codes, searchable by country (actually a taxonomy).
* A searchable listing of US colleges with dance programs. This search has many facets: college name, region within the US, degree program. Using the Views PHP API, we added a proximity search for US ZIP codes.

In the next week, we will be rolling out two new features powered by Toolset, both of which utilize post types with parent/child relationships:
* A searchable listing of dancing auditions for summer programs, colleges, a professional troops.
* A searchable listing of dancing conventions.

Both of these new features will involve custom searching via the Views PHP API.
